Why is the Chick-fil-a drive thru so weird?

Hey!  I am not dead!  Yay!  Lack of posting has been mainly due to work being crazy busy, and general laziness in the evening.  Holler!  I just had to chime in real quick about the weirdness that is the Chick-fil-a drive thru.

In my work 'hood, Chick-fil-a is the Cadillac of fast food joints.  They stand apart in quality along with stellar service.  People are always over the top friendly, (maybe because they make a decent wage and get every Sunday off?) rarely mess up my order, and hook up the condiments upon request.  They happily give you nugget sauce even when you don't order nuggets, ahem, McD's.  Plus I just really like their food, and healthy options.

But I hate their weirdo drive-thru.  To add insult to injury, this style of CFA restaurant has no inside.  There is only a walk up window and picnic tables.  Boo.  But yeah, the drive-thru has two lines, and there are no less than 6 employees out in the parking lot messing up the ordering system.

Here is what happens, I get directed into a line by a chick-fil-a parking attendant person.  Another person comes up to my window with a plastic menu to look at.  I decide my order, drive up further to a second person who then takes my order and writes it on an index card and hands the card to me.  I drive right past the ordering box onto a third person.  Third person takes my index card and relays my order via his personal cell phone to someone inside.  Then I get to the window, pay and get my food.  It is weird, and way too much interaction with a billion people just to get a chicken sandwich.

I mean, I get it that they are trying to expedite the process as best they can, but is this really saving anyone any time?   I really feel for these people too.  Not only is it hotter than all get out, but add a bunch of hot running cars on top of that.  Breathing in smoggy drive thru air doesn't sound too pleasant at all either.  Yet they do it with a smile, while the lady at the Jack in the Box next door will throw your food into your car if you don't grab it fast enough for her liking....

I don't know, it just seems weird and unnecessary.  Do they do this at your Chick-fil-a?

Wow this is insane. I have never been to a Chick-Fil-A drive through but now I'[m curious if the one a few miles away from here does this.

Ha ha...the Cadillac of fast food joints is so true! There are four Chick-Fil-A's here in Tallahassee, and they are always insane during the lunch hour. They attempted an ordering system similar to the one you just described for a few months, but recently they have reverted back to using the drive through speaker like normal.

I agree...it doesn't make much of a difference. I would wait in line for 15 minutes for their service and food though, ha ha.

That's nuts you have to deal with so many people just for a sandwich! My CFA will occasionally have someone stand outside with those plastic menus when they're really backed up and will use their little headset thingy to relay the order to the inside peeps so at most I deal with 2 people.

I totally agree about the sauces though, I love that they give sauces even without the nuggies. The chick fil a and polynesian sauces are my personal fav.

Yeah that is a little nutty. I've only been a handful of times and don't really get what all if the hype is about.

And that just sounds like a quick way to mess up an order. Not to mention, you can't even look at the menu and order at the same time?!

The Chick-Fil-A's here in Colorado do the same thing. Although we can go inside as well(I have never seen one with a walk up order window). But honestly, here it really does help the process go so much more quickly. Where they are placed here in our city, if they don't do this, then it backs up traffic on the actual streets and it isn't good. I guess I have never thought to question this. But yeah, it is the same way here too!

I used to work at Chick-fil-a, but we actually had an inside. I've only seen one like that at the beach! Crazy! The process you're describing is called "Drive Thru Play" and while it seems totally lame, it is very efficient and helps get the line moving when the restaurant is really slammed. We didn't use our cell phones, though, we had handy dandy walkie-talkies. And you are SO right about it being horribly hot! When I first started, I would work in pants and my BLACK shirt in the 100 degree heat. I finally convinced them to let me wear khaki bermuda shorts and a CFA breathe-easy polo! You have no idea how happy I was. Haha!

I love me some CFA and I have never seen that! Too much too much...What does a girl gotta do to get some waffle fries?!

That is crazy! Ours has 2 lanes for ordering, but they both have the standard speaker system thing, so you are talking to a person in the restaurant. Then if it isn't too busy, you merge into one lane to get to the window to pay and get your food. If it is really busy (like when they first opened), they had a table set up for the 2nd lane, and let people pay and get their food there. It was really efficient! I'm a big fan of CFA, but yours sounds really awkward!

I have never heard of this! One of the CFA's around me has two drive thru lanes but it's nothing like you described. Craziness!!!

They do this at lunch at the CFA I go to which is why I rarely ever go at lunch. Breakfast and dinner is much better and I don't have to go through this madness.

I only like these when they have a full restaurant too - helps with traffic. I went to one the other day that had only one line and it was SO long!

That is weird. I have never ever heard of a system like that. I've only seen one double drive through ever (a MCD's) but there were no index cards or cell phones involved!

What an odd system. Most of our chick fil a locations have added the double drive thru but they are all eat-in locations and even when staff does come outside to take your order, they have a tablet type device vs the index card. It wasn't a bad tech day for them?
